Lutein
Lutein is a compound called xanthopylls which is a carotenoid related to beta-carotene that gives vegetables like carrots teir orange color. These compounds add yellow pigments to plants and can be found in the flesh of colorful fruits and vegetables and in the leaves.
This does more than give plants teir pretty color, it is found in large amount in the lens and retina of our eyes. Here it functions as antioxidant to potentially help protect our eyes from damage caused by unstable atoms known as free radicals, which can interact with and break down healthy tissue.
It also helps to keep our eyes safe from oxidative stress.
It is a natural part of human diet when fruits and vegetables are consumed.
