Women-Of-Color

Skin Care for women-of-color

As women-of-color, our brown skin makes people stop you and compliment you on how beautiful and smooth your skin is. The unique characteristics of our brown skin will give us greater natural protection from the sun and lower our risk of skin cancer, producing more melanin, resulting in a warmer skin shade & help reduce visible signs of aging, deep wrinkles, fine lines and sun spots. However, our brown skin can suffer from uneven darkening or lightening of skin color due to potential problems with pigmentation, increased risk of keloid (raised scars) development.

Women of Color, whatever their origin, understand the challenges we all face & we can refer to the discolorations by various names but what we all know, it can take months or sometimes years to fade. Our Brown skin is unique and above all, the beauty of our warm, glowing skin is a gift of nature and comes without having to visit tanning parlors or stay on a beach for hours to get a tanned skin. Because of the greater melanin content in our beautiful brown skin, few will dispute that women of color generally look 10 years younger than many white skinned women. We must learn & understand how to maintain our beauty & we should know what skincare products, medications & cosmetics are most appropriate & suitable for our skin. No matter what color your skin happens to be, it needs the proper care.

There are some important steps that the women-of-color need to take in order to have the flawless skin that will make every skin tone even more appealing.

Acne is a prevalent condition among women of color due to the popularity of oily and T-zone skin on the face. When the oil or sebaceous glands start over producing, an acne breakout is the result. An acne breakout then leads to a blemish commonly referred to as a dark spot which is not easy to fade. It is believed that if you don't pick a pimple, there will be no blemish but that is often untrue. Even with the most disciplined attempts to keep the hands out of the face, blemishes appear. Most women of color do not burn easily, and so may feel like they can skip applying sunscreen as part of their everyday beauty regimen. This is detrimental to the health of your skin, and is a potentially dangerous oversight. All women need to apply sunscreen before spending time outdoors, but women of color need to choose an oil-free sunscreen so it will leave your skin greasy. There are a number of products and treatments available to fade the blemishes, thereby restoring smooth beautiful skin. These treatments include natural remedies and topical drug therapies. While it is always better for the health of the skin to use natural remedies for blemishes, depending on the severity of the blemish, topical medications may be necessary.
